We note that initially engineers and designers in China were reluctant to take full advantage of the savings in materials offered by the CORCON formwork system, particularly the reduced quantities of concrete and reinforcement needed by the system even though the result is an increase in the strength of the concrete slab. This reluctance was primarily due to the fact that the CORCON formwork system is unique in its design even though capable of standard engineering calculations . Moreover at this stage there had been no formal testing of the CORCON formwork system in China by a reputable authority to establish that the CORCON formwork system satisfies all of the claims it makes about strength and material savings. Therefore with the aim of obtaining the appropriate formal endorsement for the CORCON formwork system, so that it can be extensively used in China, testing of the CORCON formwork load bearing capacity was carried out by the Building Engineering Testing Centre, China Academy of Building Research (CABR) according to Chinese government standards.
